fabulous Seattle area house concerts over a 6-year span, and 2014 promises to
be truly incredible! As we bade farewell
to the hugely popular concert series of well respected musicians Lance and
Laurie Haslund, who hosted their final December house concert in Burien after a
7-year run, I soon discovered a fantastic new “Loft Concert” series located in
the quaint West Seattle home of famed jazz saxophonist Anton Schwartz. He brings top-of-the-line jazz musicians
together in an inviting setting with a party vibe, and also hosts the “Loft Concert”
series in Oakland, CA. You can visit
Anton at loftconcert.com to find more information and reserve coveted seats for
both locations!

A particularly wonderful vocal jazz house concert series is
JazzScapes, held in the beautiful Arroyos neighborhood of West Seattle and
hosted by renowned vocalist Julie Olson and esteemed pianist Ivy Nugent. They will be presenting terrific concerts
this year with an absolutely stunning array of gifted vocalists and instrumentalists,
which includes the 2012 Downbeat Critic’s Poll male vocalist winner Ed Reed on
Saturday, January 18th. Please
visit their website at Jazzscapes.com for the latest artist and concert updates
and to make reservations!

I have enjoyed many awe-inspiring house concert experiences,
and those near and dear to my heart are Nich Anderson’s stellar JazzVox
concerts. Nich is a revered local
vocalist/educator, and this month begins his 7th year of hosting
this unique vocal jazz house concert series.
Also in January, he “launches” a brand new venue on Bainbridge Island in
addition to his locations in NE Seattle, Downtown Seattle, the Madrona
neighborhood, and Camano Island. Folks flock
to JazzVox performances and rave about the high caliber of acclaimed national
and international artists gracing his stage.
Nich will present nine monthly shows in 2014 featuring superb vocalist
Peter Eldridge of New York Voices fame in January, and culminating with dazzling
songstress/bassist extraordinaire Kristin Korb in November. You can visit Jazzvox.com for the complete
schedule of artists and concerts and to reserve your seats early!

These three outstanding house concert series offer something
very special and memorable for everyone and are simply not to be missed! As an added enticement, each series features
a succulent buffet either before or after every show – we’ll see you there with
bells on!!

It’s that wonderful time of year to be thinking about special
music events coming up in the New Year, and Nich Anderson’s fabulous JazzVox
concert series comes to mind as an annual favorite of steadfast devotees and
newer fans alike. Being himself a lauded
member of the Seattle Jazz Singers, Mr. Anderson has fashioned an exquisite
taste for presenting the finest vocal jazz artists from the USA and around the
world in an intimate house concert setting.
He elaborates by saying - “I’m so excited to offer more venues for
JazzVox folks to enjoy by rotating concerts into two new Seattle spaces this
year (Madrona and Downtown) in addition to the existing locations in NE Seattle
and on Camano Island”.

January with innovative, eloquent chanteuse Alexis Cole performing on January 12th
and 13th. The incredible 2013
JazzVox concert schedule also features Grammy award-winning vocalist/composer
John Proulx who visits in February; renown singer/educator Stephanie Nakasian makes
an appearance in March; soul-stirring jazz maven Wendy Pedersen arrives in
April; mega-talented vocal phenom Jennifer Barnes is spotlighted in May;
brilliant songstress Jackie Ryan graces the stage in June; acclaimed singer
with the velvet voice, Kevin Mahogany is showcased in July; inspirational vocalist extraordinaire of New York Voices fame, Kim Nazarian helps Nich
celebrate his 41st birthday in September; “perennially classy” jazz
vocalist/songwriter also of New York Voices fame, Peter Eldridge is featured in
October; and famed eclectic song stylist Rebecca Kilgore closes out the Series
in November.

Nich exudes about his wonderful 2013 JazzVox line-up and
dedicated concert-goers – “Choosing the ten vocalists is a blessing and a curse
– with each passing season there are even more artists I’d love to repeat and
yet there are so many artists I still want to bring to the series – it’s a balancing
act. I’m so thankful for the great
audiences that support live music in Seattle and to the homeowners that make
house concerts so special!”

Another welcome feature of the multi-faceted JazzVox
experience is an absolutely succulent buffet for each concert lovingly prepared
by close friend Patti Carr and her husband Andy Carr who resides as superb
purveyor/wine connoisseur. Together they
have been co-hosting JazzVox performances in their beautiful home on Camano
Island and coordinating food and beverage layouts for a majority of the concert
venues. If you truly desire to be a part
of this amazing Series, please visit JazzVox.com for all the latest artist and
concert information and to make reservations – we’ll see you there!

I had the great pleasure of attending the highly anticipated grand
opening weekend of Bake’s Place Bellevue on Sunday, May 13. This fine
Eastside supper club, now residing in downtown Bellevue, accommodates a large seating
capacity of 100 while retaining the “living room” feel of the old Bake’s Place
in Issaquah. Free courtesy parking is
available in the Columbia West Building, where it is located, and two greeters
at the door personally extended a warm welcome to me, creating a most engaging
first impression.

The featured artist was none other than internationally
acclaimed jazz chanteuse Dee Daniels whose endearing wit and charm delighted sold-out
crowds for three consecutive nights beginning Friday, May 11. She literally brought the house down with her
smokin’ brand of gospel and blues-infused vocals, and was perfectly augmented
by a stellar combo comprised of bassist Chuck Deardorf, drummer D’Vonne Lewis, saxophonist
Brian Kent and pianist Tony Foster. Together
and as soloists, they embellished every song with just the right amount of
rhythmic audacity and melodic intention.
Dee’s 90-minute set showcased her extraordinary range and velvety,
impassioned tones, and spanned a variety of styles with heartfelt renditions of
Frank Sinatra’s swinging signature tune “That’s Life”, Earth, Wind and Fire’s inspirational
soul classic “You Can’t Hide Love”, and the captivating Billie Holiday standard
“Love for Sale”.

The musicality of Dee Daniels and her fabulous group was
truly an inspiration in such a splendid setting as “Bake’s Place on Bellevue’s
South Side”, as Dee teasingly put it. I
was immediately taken by the hushed, intimate ambiance of the room with its general
layout being very conducive to superior listening. Looking out of the beautiful floor to ceiling
windows, one saw a gorgeous patio with colorful umbrellas, perfect for accompanying
guests in the warm spring and summer days.
Equally impressive were the gracious hospitality of their world-class
staff, the wonderful service, and an exquisite array of succulent cuisine
specialties!

Bake’s Place owners Craig and Laura Baker have done a
marvelous job ushering in Bellevue’s newest venue, and their eclectic range of
live music offerings is sure to entice many concert goers throughout the
region. They welcome you to check out bakesplacebellevue.com and enjoy
an incredible musical and culinary experience with them any day of the week!

Hello, I’m Libby Graham, an avid Earshot volunteer and devoted music fan who would love to enlighten you about the thriving vocal jazz house concert scene in this region. For those of you who yearn for an alternate listening experience or wish to augment what is offered by local nightclubs and restaurants, house concerts are truly the way to go. They provide an exciting, affordable opportunity to see stellar local and national artists perform in an intimate setting. I find that these wonderful musicians are more relaxed in this kind of environment, allowing freer expression and excellence in their craft.

There are four fabulous vocal jazz house concert series to choose from, each unique in their own way. I have been closely affiliated with JazzVox which is jazz fanatic Nich Anderson’s series, now in its fifth year, featuring premier vocalists from around the world accompanied by first-rate instrumentalists from the Seattle area. He has presented such luminaries as velvet baritone virtuoso Kevin Mahogany, bebop jazz veteran Sheila Jordan, primal hipster Bob Dorough, vivacious San Francisco singer Madeline Eastman and lauded LA-based vocalist/composer John Proulx. Fresh jazz sensation and Berklee Professor Jeremy Scott Ragsdale will make his highly anticipated appearances on April 20 and 22. Nich has fantastic venues in Auburn, Camano Island, and Seattle, making it easily accessible for folks to attend. Please visit jazzvox.com for more information and to make reservations.

Another quality house concert series is JazzScapes, held by budding pianist Ivy Nugent and gifted vocalist Julie Olson in a beautiful West Seattle setting in the Arroyos neighborhood. They have hosted the show for two years now and give it a cozy yet very elegant quality. Together Ivy and Julie have cultivated a dedicated following and are known for treating their guests and artists with a gentle touch. Acclaimed local favorites as Alma Villegas and Greta Matassa as well as nationally-known prodigy Nicolas Bearde have graced their stage, and upcoming concerts include Dallas-born maven Kellye Gray on April 21st and Seattle’s own enchanting songstress Stephanie Porter on June 2nd. Visit jazzscapes.com for all the latest concert and artist information and to reserve your seats.

They are well respected musicians in this area and feature mainly classical, Americana, and swing as well as eclectic jazz artists. Their warm welcome has most recently been extended to Canadian-born vocal jazz songbird Jennifer Scott and Portland-based singer extraordinaire Nancy King, as well as fabulous local chanteuse Gail Pettis. Lance and Laurie generously accommodate a spread of delicious foods to savor and encourage patrons to bring an appetizer or dessert and beverage to share. They choose not to have a website and communicate via email with their series followers – contact them at llh@lanceandlaurie.net to be added to their mailing list and to reserve your seats early, as they typically go fast!

Founded in 2004 with an inaugural concert by renowned jazz vocalist Jay Clayton and the late, great trumpeter Floyd Standifer, this special series has become the spring and summer event worth waiting for, held in Bardach's lovely backyard garden. Concerts take place in the late afternoon on Sundays in August, and there is time for refreshments, socializing, and enjoying the garden as well as an array of incredible music. For the last two years, they have also presented smaller, intimate indoor house concerts featuring local artists as superb singer and pianist Dawn Clement and revered vocalist and educator Greta Matassa.

Our trip up to Camano Island (with my sister Sally and brother-in-law Mort) was so scenic with the snow-capped Cascades looming to our right, and when we took our seats in the living room of JazzVox co-hosts Andy and Patti Carr, we had a birds-eye view of the glistening Sound through their picture window. It was the perfect setting for one of music fanatic Nich Anderson’s marvelous JazzVox vocal jazz house concerts, and his featured artists, John Proulx and Kristin Korb, were in rare form that afternoon.

John is a lauded LA-based vocalist/composer/pianist, and Kristin does double duty as a first-rate bassist and singer who now resides in Denmark. They worked together in LA for many years and consider each other musical soul mates who speak the same “language”. This is totally evidenced in the synergy they create, anticipating each other’s ideas and complementing one another so beautifully with a rich palette of moods and emotions. Their songs ranged from John’s infectious original composition honoring his wife “Push Hands Ana” to Kristin’s soulful rendition in Portuguese of “You made me love you”. Other crowd pleasing favorites were old chestnuts as “There will never be another you” and “Them there eyes” as well as eclectic jazz arrangements of “Sing” and “Don’t fence me in”. John’s exquisite rendition of the beautiful ballad “I can’t make you love me” was especially heartfelt as was the ever enchanting “Will you still be mine?”

John Proulx and Kristin Korb together made those songs magically come alive for an enthralled audience through their dazzling vocal arrangements as well as his swinging hot piano and her amazing, groove-driven bass. It was a stellar program of sheer artistic genius and enlightened musical poetry, and a shining example of the very best JazzVox has to offer! Another wonderful feature of this series is of course the succulent buffet lovingly prepared by Patti Carr and Desiree Dyck for each concert, which today included two heavenly pasta creations and a yummy garden salad. After the show, having worked up quite an appetite, we were treated to a succulent array of chocolate desserts, wines and rich dark roast coffee that was indeed icing on the cake. I always come away from such extraordinary JazzVox concerts feeling very fulfilled, in more ways than one, and enjoy letting folks know what a treasure they are. To see this indomitable vocal jazz veteran cozy up with her long-time bassist Cameron Brown was a sight that won’t soon be replicated. After all, they originated the “base and face” concept in jazz and totally mesmerized us with their nuanced, heartfelt delivery on such classics as “I’ve grown accustomed to your face” and “It’s you or no one for me”. Also of note were her fabulous “Freedom for Humanity” interpretation of Martin Luther King’s teachings and a medley of infectious blues standards to close out this extraordinary evening.

Sheila began performing in the storied jazz clubs of Detroit and New York at an early age and was so ingratiated with the bebop scene that she married Charlie Parker’s pianist, Duke Jordan. She studied the bebop idiom with Lennie Tristano and was known for patterning her vocals after instrumental solos and improvising logical lyrics (which often rhymed). Sheila thus became one of the few singers to lead her own Blue Note album in 1962 and went on to record with a variety of artists including Steve Kuhn in the late `70s. Jazz audiences had begun to understand her uncompromising style, and by the `80s, gained the recognition she deserved 20 years earlier. The rest, as they say, is history, and still very much in the prime of her career, Sheila Jordan tours all over the world, acts as a visiting professor at Stanford, and holds a multitude of incredible seminars and master classes. In 2012 Sheila received the prestigious NEA Jazz Master award which is the highest honor in jazz and accepted it with her trademark grace and dignity.

Deborah Brown is JazzVox host Nich Anderson’s favorite living jazz singer and she certainly didn’t disappoint that sublimely lovely Friday night before last (1/6/12). Music aficionados Angela and Paul Frankel so graciously opened their Northgate home for the occasion and are scheduled to co-host two more JazzVox concerts this year. They helped kicked off Anderson’s 5th year of hosting his hugely successful house concert series to an very appreciative audience.

Deborah is an ultra soulful jazz maven hailing from Kansas City which is the birthplace of the blues jazz genre, and brought it all home along with local pianist extraordinaire Bill Anschell. Deborah’s songs ranged from Irving Berlin’s “Falling in love with love” to Ellington’s “Mood Indigo” to Don Redman’s “Gee baby Ain’t I good to you”. She has incredible vocal control and can swoop, turn, or extend a melody to fit the song’s mood and lyrics. Her scatting is effortless and beguiling, and has the ability to connect to an audience with utter flair, wit and charm. There is not much this fine lady cannot do, and I will be an uber fan of hers forever!

text-align: justify;">
The first-ever JazzVox CD “In Your Own Backyard” has been such a labor of love for Nich Anderson, host of the acclaimed JazzVox Concert Series, and its pure eloquence and charm will win over the hearts of many! Nich’s intention was to showcase new studio recordings by many of the recent JazzVox artists, and he accomplishes this so perfectly with an innate sense of real beauty and an intimate understanding of each artist.

The order of songs is carefully arranged by alternating slower pieces with up tempo ones, and the crystal clear segues set just the right mood for every song. This CD begins with a glowing rendition of “Moon River” by the wonderful LA-based songstress Kathleen Grace, so sensitively accompanied by pianist extraordinaire Darin Clendenin. The second song “Comes Love” is performed with much style and soul by LA-based singer/bassist phenom Kristin Korb, along with the esteemed Randy Halberstadt on piano. Next up is a fun, upbeat number “Please Don’t Bug Me” by the incomparable LA-based vocalist John Proulx whose mellow, understated delivery is buoyed with his swinging style on the keyboards. Superb bassist Chuck Kistler amply supplies the “groove” to this song. Segue to a smoky blues classic “Blue Monk” sung to perfection by local great Kelley Johnson accompanied with supreme artistry by East Coast guitarist Keith Ganz.

Song #5 is the ever-popular “I’m Old Fashioned” featuring the brilliant NY-based vocalist Jo Lawry whose endearing and colorful interplay with outstanding local pianist Bill Anschell is one of the CD’s highlights. Song #6 is the enchanting “theme” song of this recording “Back in your own backyard” performed with lilting grace by NY-based singer/guitarist Hanna Richardson who is accompanied by the uniquely wonderful East Coast pianist Patti Wicks. Song #7 is a gorgeous ballad “All My Tomorrows” exquisitely sung by renowned vocalist/educator Stephanie Nakasian (residing in Charlottesville, VA) and accompanied by Bill Anschell on piano with amazing subtlety of emotion. “The Cat” is a sly, catchy tune arranged and performed by famed LA-based vocalist Cathy Segal-Garcia and is accentuated perfectly by the gifted Portland-based guitarist John Stowell.

The second round of songs starts with another Kristin Korb/Randy Halberstadt collaboration “You’re getting to be a habit with me”, and Kristin is at her sultry best alongside Randy’s impassioned piano playing. Song #10 is the great Fats Waller tune “Honeysuckle Rose” with Jo Lawry’s delightful sugary sweet delivery of every note. It really is a joy to again see her at “play” with Bill Anschell who actually tickles those ivories in a stride fashion like “Fats” himself. “Welcome to my world” is one of John Proulx’s most poignant and touching compositions revealing undying love for his newly born daughter. It is pristinely augmented by bassist Chuck Kistler once again. Song #12 is the famed Lerner & Lowe tune “If ever I would leave you” performed with great affection by Kathleen Grace and accompanied so serenely and delicately by Darin Clendenin on piano. Song #13 is a timeless Jobim ballad “Triste” featuring Kelley Johnson’s evocative and beautiful phrasing together with Keith Ganz’s stunning arrangements on guitar.

“Perdido” is a rousing number with Stephanie Nakasian’s exuberantly playful interpretation, even including one of her “brass implants” (Instrumental impersonation of a trombone). Bill Anschell was clearly in a “fun” zone right along with her, playing piano with great aplomb. “Time after time” is one of Nich Anderson’s favorite standards and he does it great justice with his passionate yet mellow rendition. Nich’s honeyed timbre is reflected beautifully by the highly personalized piano style of Patti Wicks. Song #16 is “These Foolish Things”, a much beloved ballad that is performed with heartfelt simplicity and great depth by Hanna Richardson with the fabulous Patti Wicks once again. The grand finale is Gershwin’s classic “But not for me” done as a lovingly affectionate “romp” by Jo Lawry along with Bill Anschell and featuring David Lange (of Pearl Django) on accordion. It is truly a “celebration”, capturing the spirit of all the hard work and love put into this project, and is a fitting explanation point to this glorious CD.

“In Your Own Backyard” is scheduled to be released by OA2 Records on January 18 when it will be available online through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Best Buy. It will of course be featured on the OA2 Records web site (oa2records.com) and is now available on Nich Anderson’s JazzVox web site (jazzvox.com). You will want to keep this brilliant debut CD in your “forever” collection and pass it on ad infinitum to your family and friends –it’s that special!!<span style="font-size: 14pt;

My first impression of Dave Frishberg at Bake’s Place on 10/23/10 is. . Here’s a non-nonsense man whose keen observations of life and people are in the know yet who has profound reverence for days and folk-heroes gone by. Mr. Frishberg conveys great wit and poignancy in his musings and has that rare ability to laugh at himself as well. His songs are carefully crafted with sophisticated melodies and often quirky lyrics but never loses sight of the emotional essence or message he wants to make known. He was at his irreverent, delightful best performing such classics as “My Attorney Bernie”, “I Want to be a Sideman” and “Long Daddy Green” and evoked much tenderness and insight with my favorite ballad, “Heart’s Desire”. Another highlight of the evening was Dave’s hilarious, bordering on raunchy, rendition of “Moon River” giving that song a whole new ‘twist’ to be sure!

Kathleen is hailed as one of the most exciting newcomers on the scene today, and her artistry is recognized as uniquely fresh and insightful.

Songs such as “Bye Bye Blackbird”, “I’ll be Seeing You” and “Angel Eyes” are classics given a new twist with her eclectic styling and inventive groove/textures. Kathleen also sang her own original songs including “Songbird” and Elijah” so poignantly while creating impassioned poetic imagery. Her creativity was buoyed that much more by the superlative accompaniment of Darin Clendenin, a well-respected pianist and vocal coach in Seattle. He plays with great aplomb and in often majestic sweeping chords, yet he can also get into his ‘stride’ groove and keep it swinging. Together they provided a wonderful evening of fantastic entertainment in the comfort of Nich Anderson’s home in Auburn (locale for his JazzVox concerts @ jazzvox.com).

As a reflection of Kathleen’s fast-rising popularity, her debut CD “Sunrise” and equally stunning second CD “Songbird” are critically successful releases that reveal her many talents as a lyricist, producer, composer and duo performer. They feature classic jazz standards and intimate fairy tales of covers from Pat Metheny to Joni Mitchell to the Beatles that amplify her superb genre-blurring dexterity.

Kathleen Grace and her great band are now poised to dive into new musical territory with their newly release CD entitled “Mirror”. This CD features almost exclusively original material by Kathleen that embraces the language of rock, folk and jazz which critics describe as “Indie Jazz”. Each selection from the new project has a modern day fable at its center, and lessons learned and unlearned color their meaning. These stores of love, power, loss and passion are charming and textured and another facet of Kathleen’s incredibly amazing repertoire.
Every JazzVox concert I have attended this year has been absolutely stellar, and the May 9th concert with Australian-born chanteuse Chris McNulty and her husband, famed NYC guitarist Paul Bollenback, was no exception! A highly acclaimed vocalist-composer with a soaring, luminous quality, a sly seasoned delivery, and a natural sense of swing, Ms. McNulty imparts her own unique magic whether interpreting a languorous jazz classic or delving into one of her adventurous, genre-blending compositions. Chris’ innovative music draws from such diverse styles as rock, folk/pop and even symphonic, and she possesses a rare natural ability to compellingly make each song her own. She throws off the shackles of strict meter and melody, bending the rhythms and syncopating phrases in delightful, unexpected ways.

Chris’ songs are a reflection of her immaculate storytelling and she takes liberties with their lines without losing her sense of engagement with the words. They include an optimistically spiritual “All of You/The Long Road Home” as well as “The Meaning of the Blues” sung with an inventive Brazilian flair. She also demonstrates her considerable range of dynamics and striking veracity with such poignant classics as “Make It Easy on Yourself” and “My Romance”.

The subtle variations Ms. McNulty applies to each song illustrate her unwavering commitment to jazz and as a consummate artist, her unsentimental approach suggests a certain vulnerability and intimacy. She is at once a breezy swinger and impassioned balladeer capable of injecting emotion, pathos, irony and meaning into her work – a gift that few singers can lay claim to.

The perfect accompanist to Chris’ soulful style is her husband, Paul Bollenback, who plays an eclectic rubato guitar that impeccably underscores her effortless improvisations and nuanced melodies. Paul displays a dazzling array of exotic effects and alternates beautifully his methods of playing whether strumming in octaves, creating breathtaking runs and harmonies, and plucking notes with an unmatched feverency. His writing and arranging chops are second to none, and he completes her so beautifully as the pin drop-perfect singer and acoustic guitar duet. If you wish to know more about this truly remarkable duo, please visit their wonderful websites at chrismcnulty.com and paulbollenback.com.

I had the great pleasure of seeing Nancy King perform at Edmonds-Woodway High School on May 28th with Steve Christofferson and again at a JazzVox concert with Glen Moore on June 13th. If there is a jazz heaven (and I am sure there is), then Nancy King would be the reigning Godmother (pun intended). People have said that she is the greatest living jazz artist on this planet and her remarkable career has taken her all over the world. She initially came into the San Francisco jazz scene in the early 1960’s and headlined the legendary Jazz Workshop with her future mate, Sonny King. She worked also with Vince Guaraldi, John Handy and the great Jon Hendricks, whom she studied with for many years. In the early 70’s she took a break from touring the States to raise her three sons in Eugene, Oregon. On weekends, she sang with future jazz stars Ralph Towner and David Frisen, and became great friends with Glen Moore, the iconic bassist for internationally renown ensemble “Oregon”. Her collaboration with Glen led them to record three albums on the Justice label, “Impending Bloom”, followed by “Potato Radio” and “Cliff Dance”, released in 1994.

Nancy King also was performing with vaunted pianist/composer Steve Christofferson, and in 1993 they released a duo album “Perennial”. They went on to perform at festivals in France, Israel, and Canada and in 1997, Mons Records released “Straight into your Heart” featuring Nancy and Steve with the Metropole Orchestra, recorded in Holland. In 1999, Nancy toured Italy with famed bassist Ray Brown and superb guitarist John Stowell, and in the summer of 1999, she and Steve Christofferson flew to Bulgaria to headline the Bansko International Jazz Festival.

In recent years, Nancy has collaborated with acclaimed vocalist Karrin Allyson and the eclectic guitarist/poet Elvis Costello, and in 2006, recorded a duo release with brilliant pianist Fred Hersh entitled “Live at Jazz Standard” in NYC. Through the years and still today, critics rave about her absolutely thrilling improvisations and flawless technical wizardry. Nancy enthralls audiences with her effortless scatting and supple voice and injects great humor and pathos into everything she does. If you have only heard about her, she is an awe-inspiring luminary in person – take it from me.

Her jazz duets with Steve Christofferson (on piano and melodica) May 28th were nothing short of spectacular and they complimented each other as if they had never been apart for some years before. She shone at her best on “All the Things You Are” by Jerome Kern, and Steve was equally mesmerizing on the tune “Sugar” by Stanley Turrentine.

Nancy King then performed with her other long-time partner, famed bassist Glen Moore, at the JazzVox concert in Auburn on June 13th. Nancy was her fascinating yet unassuming self with such witty satires as “Cliff Dance” and “Alligator Dancing”, as well as the exquisitely poignant “Crooked Road”. Glenn Moore accompanied her with great care and gave a brilliant display of his robust approach and dazzling “special effects”. I am still reeling from the wondrous experience of seeing Nancy perform so gracefully with Steve and Glen – Both evenings were sheer ecstasy and magic that I will always remember in my heart!

Libby Grahamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11011225446012146049noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8739121467545230728.post-50194852690042299302010-10-10T16:42:00.000-07:002010-10-10T16:42:26.711-07:002010 JAZZVOX CONCERT SERIES PREVIEWNich Anderson’s dream come true of an extraordinary vocal jazz house concert series in his FederalWay/Auburn home has certainly taken flight as we celebrate its second-year anniversary in January, 2010. Nich is the JazzVox host and a member of the lauded Seattle Jazz Singers. I have had the great pleasure of attending every concert in 2009, and his most recent offerings were nothing short of spectacular with East Coast chanteuses Patti Wicks and Hanna Richardson in October, soul-satisfying sensation Kenny Washington in November, and fiery, passionate songstress Jackie Ryan and the iridescent Typhanie Monique in December.

I and many of Nich’s fans and friends eagerly anticipate this year’s stellar concert lineup and he exudes so much enthusiasm talking about it - “The second season was so fantastic including one of my all-time favorites Madeline Eastman. Year 3 is starting off with the amazing Jo Lawry (who has recorded recently with Fred Hersch and Sting) - her freshman disc is such a breath of fresh air - I’m just so excited she’s coming! Many of the artists have expressed interest in repeating so we’ll have return visits from some JazzVox concertgoers’ past favorites in addition to some new names.“

This incredible concert series continues to garner rave reviews from newcomers and long-time friends as Louise Uriu who says, “I have been to several JazzVox concerts and have always been thrilled with the opportunity to chat one-on-one with the artists. Not only do I get to gab about various musical ideas, but I also get to know them as a person! Talking about family, food and travels - it really makes the experience meaningful! Plus - Patti makes the most delicious treats for us after the show - worth the price of admission right there!”

The artists who perform at the JazzVox concerts “…always come away with a full heart” as Nich says affectionately. This is reflected in the words of Patti Wicks, who wowed jazz devotees in October with her soulful, nuanced vocal delivery and highly personal piano style. “What a joy it is to play for Nich Anderson’s first-rate JazzVox Concert Series! He gives his artists first-class treatment professionally and personally. I love the warm and friendly living room setting in both Nich’s cozy Auburn condo and the Carr’s lovely Camano Island home. JazzVox concert venues have a great piano and sound system, friendly, appreciative audiences, and great home-made food for the after-concert “hang”. It doesn’t get any better than that!”

The schedule of 2010 Jazz Vox concerts through April is as follows: January - brilliant jazz songstress Jo Lawry w/Bill Anschell; February - mega-talented vocalist/bassist Kristin Korb w/Randy Halberstadt; March - renowned singer/educator Stephanie Nakasian w/Bill Anschell; April - Grammy award-winning vocalist/composer John Proulx w/Chuck Kistler. Specific dates and times for these concerts will be available upon confirmation as well as information on upcoming concerts May through December.

Not only will you be treated to these exceptionally fine artists but following the show, a sumptuous gourmet buffet awaits you lovingly created by Patti Carr, a close friend and colleague of Nich’s. She and her husband, pianist extraordinaire Andy Carr, also host JazzVox concerts in their lovely home on Camano Island, so you could potentially see a concert in each locale all in one weekend - what a golden opportunity!
John Proulx is an extraordinarily gifted vocalist, reminiscent of the incomparable Chet Baker, whose mellow, understated delivery underscores a canny sense of rhythm. He performs with impassioned zeal and freshness yet pays true homage to such jazz masters as Hoagy Carmichael and George Gershwin. His great respect for the lyric and melody shines in every song and he infuses each with such love and wisdom. John is also an outstanding Grammy-winning songwriter and plays a sizzling hot, swinging piano as well. He has composed for such luminaries as Jazz legend Nancy Wilson and in recent years teamed with bassist Chuck Berghofer and drummer Joe LaBarbera on both his splendid CDs “Moon and Sand” (2006) and “Baker’s Dozen” (2009).

I had a fabulous time seeing John perform in a concert on Friday, April 9th in Auburn, WA and again on Sunday at Camano Island, WA as part of the JazzVox house concert series. Nich Anderson is the series’ wonderful host and features sensational national and local vocalists to rave reviews. Both settings provided an enchanting, intimate experience which beautifully complimented John’s considerable charm and exquisite musicality. John shared delightful insights into each song’s origin and made the music come alive with his heartfelt renditions. His ballads and original pieces are particularly pristine, notably “I Remember You”, “Time after Time” and John’s own composition “Welcome to my World”. He also revealed his lighter side on toe-tapping tunes as “Look for the Silver Lining” and “Hey Boo”.

John Proulx is one of LA’s world-class emerging talents and has already begun to gain national prominence following his successful 4-month stint at Loews Regency Hotel in NYC. This engagement was offered to him by Michael Feinstein, a seasoned and celebrated singer/pianist in his own right. John has that unique, special “something” that appeals to a great many people and I am so confident that he will go well beyond his highest aspirations. Next time he is in town, come experience for yourself what magic John weaves with his effortless improvisations and enticing, nuanced vocal style. Until then, check out his fabulous website at johnproulx.com for all the latest artist bio and concert schedule information, as well as updates on his upcoming CD – he is simply not to be missed!
Libby Grahamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11011225446012146049noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8739121467545230728.post-42496553925635940792010-10-10T15:50:00.000-07:002010-10-10T15:50:35.810-07:00Jazz Vocalist/Trumpter Phenom Jake Bergevin at Bake's Place - June 11, 2010
I went to Bake’s Place in Issaquah on Friday, June 11th and had the great pleasure of seeing vocalist and trumpeter extraordinaire Jake Bergevin. He is one of the nicest people you’ll meet and has a mega talent to match with his effortless crooning vocalese, inventive original compositions, and sensitive re-imaginings of works by such artists as Kurt Elling and Leonard Bernstein. His rendition of the classic standard “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Your Face” and a fresh arrangement of Sting’s “The Girl with No Regrets” were shining examples of his varied, eclectic repertoire. Joining Jake that evening was an exceptional rhythm section comprised of Dan Kramlich on piano, Brad Boal playing drums, RJ Whitlow on bass, and local favorite Susan Pascal playing vibes. Jake’s second set was themed around songs of New York and the debut of brand new material for him. Especially wonderful were his takes on “New York, New York”, “Let Me off Uptown” and a couple of songs dedicated to two famous NY bridges, “Chelsea Bridge” and “Brooklyn Bridge”.

Jake is the gifted jazz band director at Edmonds-Woodway High School and in May, gained national recognition for his band’s participation in the famed Essentially Ellington competition at Lincoln Center, NYC. He also fronts his popular big band, “Javatown Swing Orchestra” and will be performing with them for the 13th year in a row at Ellensburg’s Jazz in the Valley on Saturday, July 31st. Jake’s exciting summer performance line-up also includes PLU (Pacific Lutheran University) Jazz under the Stars on Thursday, July 15th, The Bloedel Reserve Concert Series (Bainbridge Island) on Saturday, July 17th and The Mill Creek Community Summer Concert Series on Thursday, August 5th.

Jake Bergevin is such an integral part of the Seattle jazz scene and performs at private engagements, house concerts, restaurants and supper clubs in addition to the numerous prestigious festivals and events he participates in each year. His effervescent energy, classy style, as well as a disarming sense of humor always delights audiences wherever he goes. Please visit Jake’s wonderful website at: jakebergevinmusic.com for his artist bio, concert schedule, and all the info on his two acclaimed CDs, “My Name is Jake”, and “Holding Back the Dawn”. He is at once the consummate entertainer and an evocative artist simply not to be missed!
Libby Grahamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11011225446012146049noreply@blogger.com0
